Have been away for a few days & when looking for something else I found this old lead mine. Now managed by the Shropshire mines trust this mine ceased working in 1955 after many years dating back to Roman times. A fascinating history can be found by a web search for "Snailbeach lead mine"

A small part of the total moss area in general diection of the Strategic starfish history trail. The pool @ front is the home of the Raft spiders but I saw none. The whole site was worked extensively for many years to extract peat on a commercial basis

Those who watched BBC's Countryfile Sunday 25th May will have seen the story of this. Large baskets of inflammable material where placed on the Moss connected to this little hut by cable. To be used as a diversion site for German bombers in WW2 hoping they would bomb the bog instead of the large northern cities after their pathfinder aircraft had dropped their sighting flares

Fenn's Whixall & Bettisfield mosses straddle the English/Welsh border near Whitchurch. They are a NNR of almost 1000 hectares of acidic & waterlogged area, famous for specialist bog plants & insects. The area in this picture is the area for White faced Darter Dragonfly. Unfortunately too cold for them to be out on my 2 visits but next day DF sightings had 8+ out, by then I was seeing them at their other Midlands site of Chartley Moss in Staffordshire. These mosses are now being restored after peat extraction for wildlife & because peat stores huge quantities of carbon by Natural England as a National Nature reserve

The view across towards Bournemouth past Old Harry rocks as we sat @ the new visitor centre refurbished from the old mock "Castle". I need to go back again as it is a great place.
