The first high-rise building designed by Mies van der Rohe to be built. Originally intended to have a steel and glass curtainwall, the front facade was built with masonry and aluminum framed windows infilling the reinforced concrete structural frame. This was due to steel shortages after World War II. The Promontory Apartments were opened in 1949.
