This oak stair and railing assembly was taken from a house in Morlaix, France. It was built around 1522 - 30.

Queen Victoria objected to seeing David's full male anatomy, so the museum staff commissioned a removeable fig leaf which could be applied for her visits. Otherwise, since the sculpture has been on view, it has been shown uncovered.
