A pair of rebuilt EMD SD45s (7508 & 7526) was providing plenty of power for a southbound Wisconsin Central train of taconite ore loads seen here passing through Van Dyne, Wisconsin shortly after 12 noon on January 20th, 2001.
When the WC rebuilt these locomotives, the first digit of the road number was simply changed from a 6 to a 7, so these two were formerly the WC 6508 & 6526 – if you look closely at the number boards the “6” can be seen showing behind the “7”.
Since the former Santa Fe SD45s were generally in much better condition mechanically, nearly all of the WC rebuilds (34 of 43), including this pair, were their ex-Burlington Northern units. ~~ A Jeff Hampton Photograph ©
