That's ice covering the entire shallow water shoreline of the lake. In winter, ice is 6-8 ft thick and then begins melting at the surface in late spring. This glacier-like ice mass extended 2-3 ft thick along miles of shoreline lake bottom. Nearby, small streams enter the lake where Grayling were spawning.

Tartan Rapids in winter's embrace. On this trip, we finally found fish eggs. DNA testing will determine if it is Cisco or Whitefish eggs.

This is an interesting view as I approach one of the remaining ice tunnels. Some of the ceiling has melted. The big falls can be seen at the other end. Almost July and a heat wave of 30 Celsius yet the ice world holds on!

May 28, 2011. Ice walls up to 15 feet (5m) high are slow to melt on a Grayling stream near Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories. I had to dodge and burn to balance out the complicated lighting situation and the extreme contrasts it created.
