This is the start of what was a logistically complicated Arctic expedition that was to test human endurance, perseverance, and the ability to do science in an extremely remote part of the world. the ATVs were flown in, along with all the fuel and equipment. Our purpose was to study Arctic Char life history in a stream situated at the near highest latitude on the continent. Landing site was an abandoned airstrip at an old DEW line site.

I never imagined Arctic Char moving through such shallow streams to get to their spawning grounds. On hot days when water temperatures reached over 20 C, the fish were completely indifferent to my presence. I could even touch them. On colder mornings, they were very skittish.
