My Pentax has been looking at me for a while to stretch its shutter, so this favourite tree not too far from home that I've photographed before is always worth the stop as the conditions are often varied here.
Sometimes there are sheep in the scene and other times the Ruahine ranges can be seen in the background. This time the bare tree and empty landscape seemed to encapsulate the mood of winter very nicely.

A final image from Waihi Falls - a mono image as some bright sunlight broke through and fell across the falls.
25-meters high, Waihi Falls can be found in Waihi Falls Scenic Reserve, which covers approximately 22 hectares of land. Although the waterfall is not very popular and located in a quiet and peaceful spot, the falls is absolutely beautiful and deserves the visit.

I decided to look for some smaller scenes within the main waterfall - this one I thought worked quite nicely. Taken in the second main stream of water from the LHS of the previous image.

With their extraordinary haunting song, and obscure evolutionary relationships to other birds, kōkako evoke the forests of ancient New Zealand/Aotearoa perhaps more than any other species. More likely to be heard than seen, North Island kokako have persisted in small populations particularly in the central North Island from the King Country through to Te Urewera. They typically inhabit tall native forest dominated by tawa (Beilschmiedia tawa), singing from tree-tops but often feeding in understorey layers.
All mainland North Island populations persist only with sustained control of key pest mammals (ship rats and brushtail possums). All unmanaged populations are extinct.

A view of the river Thames taken in the pretty market town of Wallingford in England in 1992.
Wallingford bridge pictured, has origins dating back to the 14th century and the town is well known as a filming location for the Midsomer Murders TV series.
My mother was English, and her family were from around this area, so it was a treat to visit and to meet other family relations and connections in Wallingford.
