In an occurrence I can count on one hand in my 15 years in Alaska, 3 Alaska Railroad GP38s are northbound with a train off the barge in Whittier. Most of the time the GP38s are used in the yard or perhaps one would be used in a road train. Catching three, seen here at MP 69, was a real visual treat not to mention the sound. 8.5.22

A southbound CSX manifest will soon roll by the newly built Railfan Platform built at Crofton, KY. While I did not take this photo from the platform it is definitely worth a visit and to spend a few minutes waiting on the next CSX train. 10.12.24

After spending a few weeks traveling between Anchorage-Kentucky-Colorado-Kentucky-Anchorage I have returned home and will hopefully spend some time posting a few pictures. Here is CSX manifest M498, having just changed crews at Trenton, KY, back on the move northbound for Evansville, IN 10.12.24

My short little train is crossing the rebuilt trestle over Upper and Lower Trail Lake. The greenish/gray cast marks this as a glacier fed lake. Fed by none other than Trail Glacier. From this point until they arrive in Portage in about 33 miles they climb through the Kenai Mountains where grades reach 3% and no roads follow. It is roughly 50 miles for a vehicle to cover the same points on the highway. rest assured the train never wins as it takes the roughly 90 minutes to traverse said distance.

The small freight I have been following is crossing the Snow River. This river plagues the railroad every other year when an ice dam breaks up river and floods the railroad. Fortunately this is an off year.
