This series grew out of an attempt to shoot the city streets at night, only I wasn’t excited about the images I was capturing. I discovered what really interested me was the lights in the high-rise buildings, their random patterns and the mix of color temps, and I couldn’t shoot those in any interesting fashion from street level. I needed to be higher up. I wasn’t interested in shooting skyline shots though, and from past experience I knew that trying to get access to rooftops would be time intensive and most likely unsuccessful in providing the number of locations it would take to create a series.
That was when the idea of shooting from the top level of parking decks came to me. There are public decks through out the city, and I thought I could talk my way into a couple private ones. Taking the idea a step further, I decided to make the parking decks an integral part of each image’s composition, and it is that commonality, along with the night time lights, that ties all the images together in the series.
I focused on spatial relationships, the differences in architectural styles, and how the parking deck–––which was also my shooting platform–––could be included in the image in a creative and meaningful way. Thus, this series was launched.
I can see how one could view CITY LIGHTS as an extension of my PARKING DECK series, but if so, it is really through the back door. I hope you see some images that you like.
