This image is part of a new still-life series. My daughter-in-law is a potter and runs a pottery studio where she and others teach classes. One of the other potters, Gabriella, also makes wonderful brushes, the likes of which I have never before seen. As soon as I saw them on display I knew I had to shoot them. Gabriella says they are based on ancient Chinese brushes used for their calligraphy. Apparently, the Chinese invented brushes around 300BCE. Gabriella makes hers with harvest black and yellow bamboo. Some are finished with a torch. The hairs are moose, squirrel, and buck tail. The brushes are fully functional and can be used to apply color to pottery, or viewed as artwork in their own right.
