It has lasted long enough and even now is spreading more than 6 hours on a modern high-speed train almost east to almost west: Vienna to Bregenz. Clear as the crystal of Kaiser’s drinking glass is the water in Bodensee, a lake around which three countries gathered so tightly that they feel each other’s shoulders. Yes, of course, the history of places like this is always complicated. But now all looks so idyllic and peaceful that people seem to enjoy the tightness of their countries shoulders touching each other with the local train, similar to the one going on larger distances within the city of Vienna, travelling at most 45 minutes between Lindau (Germany), Bregenz (Austria) and Rohrschach (Switzerland).
If a Swiss citizen suddenly wants a pork stilt in a beer sauce, the trip will be rather long by local means. But Austrian strudel is much more accessible. And Bregenz is definitely the biggest city of that corner of the world offering many modern touches such as a lake-scene where the viewers can enjoy the absolutely stunning decorations right on the water. Opera in this venue must be definitely worth a try.
