Malin Beg Bay, Glencolmcille, County Donegal, Ireland
One of Ireland's most traditional fishing harbours can be found on Malin Beg. No fancy electronic cranes, led lights, signage everywhere nor modern boats with loud power engines are found here on this little harbour. Instead, there are beautiful traditional wooden row style boats which haven’t changed in design for hundreds of years. Each one lovingly hand painted the most beautiful colours of blue imaginable. All right next to the old harbour master’s cottage still overlooking today.
These little boats travel out along Malin Beg Bay each morning at the break of dawn dropping their lobster pots into deep waters. At the end of each day after fishing for some fresh mackerel, pollock & whiting the fishermen would return in anticipation to retrieve their precious pots, hopefully full of delicious lobsters and crabs.
The only thing that will force these fishermen to remove their wooden boats out of these waters is the threat of stormy seas as seen here. After putting so much craftsmanship and care into their beloved boats, there is no way they are going to leave them in open water to the mercy of storms. This is why these little wooden boats have lasted decades and will likely last a few more judging by the care & love their skippers have for each of them.
