This is an image of papillae, the tiny hair-like structures on your tongue. The tongue is covered with many of these backward-facing projections, called filiform papillae, which sense pressure. Interesting fact: the tongue is the only muscle in the human body that works without any support from the skeleton! Magnification: X4.

High magnification image of a cross section of a corn stem, showing parenchyma tissue (blue) scattered with vascular bundles (Red and orange clusters). More corn (or maize) is grown worldwide than any other crop in the world. But as well as being a staple food in many parts of the world, starch from maize can also be used to make plastics, fabrics, adhesives, and other chemical products. It is increasingly being used as a source of renewable fuel.

Low magnification image of the wing of a fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster). The wings of a fly can beat up to 220 times per second, and flies are able to rotate in flight by 90 degrees in under 50 milliseconds. Each transparent section of a fly wing is actually one cell!

High magnification image of several diatoms. Part of the algae family, diatoms are single-celled organisms that occur abundantly in both saltwater and freshwater. They are more important than they seem: they form the basis of the entire food chain! The body is composed of two halves, which fit together like a tiny pill box. The cell walls contain silica, which is preserved in deposits known as siliceous or diatomaceous earths (ooze). Once hardened into rock it is called diatomite.

High magnification image a cross-section of the stem of a Basswood (Tilia) tree. It is also known as the linden tree or lime tree (though it bears no relation to the fruit). The trees can reach heights of up to 40 meters, and some specimens have reached considerable ages… one tree in Gloucestershire, UK, is thought to be 2,000 years old!
