The Cruquiusmuseum occupies the old Cruquius steam pumping station in Cruquius, The Netherlands. It derives its name from Nicolaas Kruik (1678–1754), a Dutch land-surveyor and one of many promotors of a plan to pump the Haarlemmermeer (Haarlem lake) dry.
The steam mill Cruquius is itself a Dutch National Heritage Site ('Rijksmonument') for the steam history of the engine within. It is thought to be the largest steam engine – and certainly the largest beam engine – ever built. The engine was built by Harvey & Co, of Hayle, Cornwall. The diameter of the piston is 144 inches (3.7 m). [wiki & me]

I wanted to give a bit of a Moorish feel to this very characteristic building in this HDR edit.

The Gardepoort, (Gaurdians Gate) links Martinikerkhof with the Turfstraat and lies adjacent to Prinsenhof, the former episcopal seat and later one of the residences of the Stadtholders of the (nowadays royal) Orange family.

The early 20th century Provincial Government Building on Martinikerkhof, right smack in the centre of Groningen.

In the foreground on the left the facade of Sixteenth century 'Huis Cardinaal', considered by some as one of the best examples of Renaissance architecture in The Netherlands.

The facade of Sixteenth century 'Huis Cardinaal', now incorporated into the early 20th century Provincial Government Building. Some consider this to be one of the best examples of Renaissance architecture in The Netherlands.

De gevel van Huis Cardinaal, nu onderdeel van het begin 20e eeuwse Provinciehuis in Groningen. Overigens stond het oorspronkelijke Huis Cardinaal in de Oude Kijk in't Jatstraat.

The Jewish Synagogue (1906) in Folkingestraat was the thriving center of Jewish Life in Groningen before WW II. The Jewish population of Groningen in the first half of the 20th century numbered about 3000 people, on a total population of about 120.000. Nearly all were deported to concentration camps. Few of them survived the atrocities. The census of 1945 counted a paltry 120 Jewish inhabitants.
