On a bitterly cold winter day in Lesotho, I saw this horserider, an elderly man on a striking white steed, riding upwards to the 10,000 foot high Lisiu Mafika Pass. There was quite a bit of snow and ice along the southward-facing sides of the road and especially at the top of the pass. Lesotho is a mountain country and outside the tropics. In July, it can get very cold indeed, with nights down to -10C not uncommon in the highlands.

The horse-rider stopped and posed for a photo happily, but he seemed to speak no English and my Sesotho is limited to "Hello!", "How are you?" and the like.

From here, I drove another 60 km to the Katse Dam, the goal of that day's journey, and grabbed some lunch in a little pub around there. Three hours later, I passed the man again as I returned, with the temperatures starting to drop rapidly in the late afternoon; by this stage on the other side of the pass, still riding on.
