Looking across to the Irish mainland from Connemara from Inisheer in the Aran Islands – the nearer hills to the right are the Maamturks; the further away hills to the left are the Twelve Pins, about 50 kilometres away.

When on the island of Inisheer for a ham radio competition in 2008, I had the privilege to photograph one of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen. It took me many years, but I have just got around to processing the photos properly.

This is a close up shot towards the mountains in the west of Connemara. I think the most distant hills here are The Twelve Pins, but I’m not totally sure. Guidance from those who know the area better than I is welcome.

Inisheer (Irish: Inis Oírr) is the smallest and most eastern of the three Aran Islands in Galway Bay, Ireland. With about 260 permanent residents (2016 census), it is more populous than Inishmaan but less than Inishmore. These photos are taken from the sea wall outside Tigh Ned’s (Ned’s Place pub) in the tiny settlement of Baile an Lorgain (Town of the shin-shaped hill).
