My summer holiday started when I realised the cloud was breaking and I was due for the most extraordinary sunset. This is about 35 mins flight time west of Helsinki, so having searched high and low on Google Earth and using flight tracking software, I’ve come to the conclusion this must be the Östergötland archipelago on Sweden’s west coast, south of Stockholm. A huge collection of tiny islands shading into a lake-speckled land.

A magical sunset, just after 11 pm local time, about 5 miles above the Östergötland coast of western Sweden with its endless islands and lakes. Flying over the Nordic countries late on a clear summer evening was one of the great privileges of being alive.

Too early for streetlights, too late for the scene to be well lit, this is what Stockholm looks like when it is hard to discern any sign of human habitation. In front of shot is the island of Ornö. The huge belt of water running across the middle of the shot is the lake of Mälaren.

View the south east towards the Åland Islands, shimmering in the post-sunset glow. About 15 mins flight time west of Helsinki on a flight from London to Gatwick.

The innner archipelago in Finland’s remarkable archipelago sea from several thousand metres up, during a late, lingering, summer twilight.
The bulk of the land in the foreground is the Bromarf Peninsula, which sits at the end of a long series of land-tongues of the type for which south western Finland is famous. Behind are the islands of Isoluoto, Ulkoluoto and Pettu. In the far distance, around 80lm away and close to being lost in the mist, the lights of Turku are just visible in the far top-left of the shot.
