A look eastwards across the Sea of Galilee in late afternoon twilight from just by the Greek monastery in Capernaum to the Golan Heights. Those barren hills are reflecting the red in the post-sunset glow beautifully.

While Nazareth is a big, modern, growing city of shopping malls and dual carriageways, its Old City is still a place of old-fashioned Middle Eastern charm. This warren of laneways, many too narrow for cars, climbing up a steep hillside is a wonderful place to get lost in. Some parts are very touristy, especially around the historic churches and the extensive souk; but much more of this roughly 4 km² area consists of ordinary residential streets that few tourists venture into. The street names are all four digit numbers, and GPS can be a little shaky in these narrow lanes, which makes it very easy to get lost. Luckily you’ll never be too far from someone to give you directions.
This shot was taken in an area where I saw no other tourists.
Nazareth is the cultural and economic heartland of the Arab community in Galilee and to some extent in the whole of Israel. It is perfectly safe to visit and the people are extremely friendly: the only real problem is that it can be a little pricey.

The Duc in Altum Church, also known as ‘The Boat Church’ at the site of ancient Magala on the shores of the Sea of Galilee.
The Church was completed in 2014. The decidedly postmodern architecture claims to be inspired by late Byzantine octagonal churches, but has more than a touch of Star Wars’ Tantooine about it. The church is dominated by the picture window that takes up almost all of the east end, allowing a view of the Sea of Galilee and the Golan Heights at the other side, in front of which is an ensemble of a fisherman’s boat and an empty cross.
Duc in Altum means “put out [the nets] into the deep” and commemorates the event in which Christ commanded Simon Peter and the fishermen to go into the depths the Sea of Galilee to catch fish: “When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, ‘Put out into the deep water (‘duc in altum’) and let down your nets for a catch.’” (Luke 5:4).

A stadium on the slopes of Mount Precipice was built for the official visit of Pope Benedict XVI to Nazareth in 2009. Here he said Mass for 40,000 people, in a region with a large Christian population that has not held political power for nearly a thousand years.
Nowadays the site is unvisited, decaying, a little sad – and also very photogenic in the twilight!

Ra'anan Street, in the grungy but gentifying Florentin district of Tel Aviv, catches the autumn morning sunlight beautifully.
