Close-up of a male Pronghorm (Antilocapra americana). OK it's not technically an antelope - this species is most closely related to Giraffe and Okapi. Evolved, like the African antelope species, to outrun predators, this species proved very hearty and successful. They outlived the North American species of cheetahs that went extinct in pre-historic times. Incredibly fast (only the Cheetah achieves faster speeds on land), the Pronghorn have the added advantage of being able to sustain their top speed for miles. Custer State Park, The Black Hills, South Dakota.

Our first day in the Shoshone National Forest, looking for Bighorn Sheep (Ovis canadensis). Nice when they come right up to greet you.

Bighorn Sheep (Ovis canadensis) ram surveying the area. He's on a bluff overlooking a creek. When a guy decided to walk his dogs - off leash - on the opposite creek bank, the two ewes accompanying the ram ran off. The ram stared down the dogs for a few minutes, before joining the ewes.
