A view of the grain elevator at Mountaire Farms in Frankford, Sussex County, Delaware. The older building in the foreground is labeled as the Frankford Water Plant on Google Maps but I doubt that was the original use of that building.

There was a strong storm moving into the area while I was photographing these giant silos at Risser Grain in Turbotville Pennsylvania. I had to move fast as the wind was starting to ramp up and the clouds behind me were turning from white to mostly black with lightning flashes in the distance. Anyone who says that film photography slows you down should have seen me work during those minutes, LOL.

The W.E. Custer Mill was built in 1913 in Milton, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. W.E. Custer operated the mill until he died in 1943. Custer ground flour and also made scratch feed for chickens. The mill had a grain storage capacity of 10,000 bushels. It utilized a roller bearing system powered by a 35 horsepower electric motor which drove the feed department and receiving separator, and an additional 20 horsepower motor to drive the flour department. The mill was lit with electricity but heated by a hot air furnace. The mill footprint is 30x60 feet, with a one-story attached warehouse. Subsequent mill owners continued to operate it until 1962, after which it stood idle for decades. In recent years a new owner seems to have occupied the mill, making many improvements, such as new windows.
