Inside the grand ballroom inside Lynnewood Hall, part of Architect Horace Trumbauer's design for the mansion of Peter A.B. Widener and his family. The mansion was built in the 1890s and included many design cues taken from France, leading the property to be known as the "American Versailles". During Peter A.B. Widener's time, the building also served as home to one of the largest art collections in the United States, most of which was donated to the National Gallery in Washington, D.C., after 1943. Family life on the property was detailed in the book "Without Drums" by Peter A.B. Winder II. The 100,000-square-foot mansion has 110 rooms, 55 of which are bedrooms.
The building is not currently open to the public. Through a special workshop run by Abandoned America and Unique Photo, I had the opportunity to photograph the property. The workshop proceeds benefit the Lynwood Hall Preservation Foundation, the property's new owners since 2023. For a complete recount of the fascinating history of Lynnewood Hall and the current efforts to restore the building and property, I strongly encourage you to visit the Lynnewood Hall Preservation Foundation's website at lynnewoodhallpreservation.org/history where you can become a Patreon supporter and help the restoration efforts.
