The bird with the crazy beak., but why rarer than you think?

Spoonbills are not a common sight in the UK with as little as 20 birds wintering, but that's not it

The RSPB state that there are only 0-4 pairs of breeding birds in the UK., and what you are looking at here is the result of that breeding., an extremely rare Spoonbill chick!

And this bird was full of fun! Like most 'kids' full of energy., bouncing up and down., splashing around., and doing Kangaroo hops., whilst always making sure he/she still had our attention (which probably just made it even more hyper active) it was having a 'ball'!

Wonderful and precious bird., all I can say is stay safe and long life my friend

We got our patience tested, as they seemed to be sleeping forever!
But then they woke up - and the entertainment started.
It was quite a sight with all these Spoonbills, and funny to see them all pointing the same way

A fishing Spoonbill., nothing unusual there

But the thing that we liked about this shot was the look on the fishes face!

OK., fishes can't have 'looks'., and the fish cannot have any idea what's happening
But never the less there is a sort of 'resigned to my fate' expression there!

You spot a couple of Spoonbills (the bird with the almost crazy long spectacular black beak) in a lake and it's click., click., click! Spoon's with their enormous beak's open., Spoon's splashing around., Spoon's (a lot of the time) asleep. Then chaos! the alarm bell rings., there is a Raptor around and every bird in the lake simultaneously takes to the air., including the Spoons! providing a perfect (and for me first time opportunity) to get these outrageous birds in flight at a reasonable distance! Sometimes (for a change) things do fall your way!

RSPB: The species is of conservation concern and a very rare breeding bird in the UK. They are listed are listed on Schedule 1 of The Wildlife and Countryside Act

So my beautiful young friend you're officially a rarity!

But year by year there seems to be more and more of them., perhaps I am being over optimistic but just maybe this wonderful species (like the Bittern) is going to be a massive success story

I truly hope so!
