Besides many others, there's 1 main annual event in Ulm: the Week of Swear Celebrations. The Nabada is a part of it, and it always takes place on the second to last Monday in July.

This tradition began already when Ulm was a free Imperial City back in the 14th Century. At that time, every two years after the Mayor of Ulm made his Oath to the city (see previous photo) a Competition of fishermen took place on the River Danube too. In the intervening years other people of Ulm started the funny custom of "paddling down the river" which they called Nabada.

From these early beginnings, a move has developed on the River Danube over the years. Motto boats are prepared in detail, groups organize their participation in the "Nabada" and one or the other just sits in a dinghy and is thus quickly in the middle of the event...
