Peter Paul Rubens, Siegen 1577 - Antwerpen 1640
Selbstbildnis / Selfportrait (ca. 1638)
Kunsthistorisches Museum, Wien
This is the last of Rubens's four self-portraits, executed shortly before his death. The portrait shows him dressed in black and wearing a feather hat, like a Grand Seigneur. Beneath the sunken lid glints an eye laden with the experience of life. He seems to have lived a blessed existence and in doing so to have reached a true serenity of heart. Gout alone had his measure. Despite the attentions of the best Brussels doctors, he died of a fierce attack on 30 May 1640.

Cimon und Efiginia / Cimon and Iphigenia (ca. 1617)
Kunsthistorisches Museum, Wien
Frans Snyders painted the still life with the monkey while Jan Wildens painted the landscape.
Cimon, a handsome but coarse and uneducated youth, fell in love with Iphigenia (or Efigenia) and married her. The effects of love were beneficial and turned him into an educated and graceful man. This is an improving story from Boccaccio's 'Decameron'
