The Basilica of Sant'Abbondio was built in Romanesque style from 1050 - 1095. It was erected over a pre-existing 5th century Palaeo-Christian church and was dedicated to St. Abndius, bishop of Como from 450 to his death in 489.

The Cathedral of Como is decicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and it is the last Gothic cathedral built in Italy with constructions beginning in 1390. The imposing west front was built between 1457 and 1498, featuring a rose window, numerous decorative elements and three portals. Finally in 1770, the Rococo cupola was finished by Filippo Juvarra.
