The name Aigues-Mortes means dead or stagnant water and refers to the marshes and ponds surrounding the village which never had potable water.
The city walls and several towers are well preserved and quite impressive for such a small town. Building of the fortification started in the 8th century by Charlemagne and was continued in the 13th century by King Louis IX. the Saint and his son Philip III the Bold. The city walls which were finally completed in the 16th century were never destroyed.
The Tour de Constance (Tower of Consistancy) was bujilt under King Louis IX. the Saint from 1242 to 1254 to replace the previous tower built under Charlemagne.
King Louis IX the Saint started from Aigues-Morts on the 6th Crusade (1248 – 1254) and the 7th Crusade (1270).
