On occasion of his 300th birthday, the Hessian State Museum at Darmstadt is celebrating the artist with the major exhibition »Remember Venice! Bernardo Bellotto draws". The collection of Bellotto drawings belongs to the HLMD's inventory since 1829. It came into the museum inventory together with four drawings by Bellotto's uncle and teacher Canal. All sheets came from one source, namely the artist's own belongings. So far the collection was exhibited only once at Darmstadt in 1981. The focus of the Darmstadt drawings is on Bellotto's Italian creative years between 1735 and 1746, during which the young artist developed into an independent painter of views. The first sheets show the artist still under the influence of his uncle Canal, while later sheets reveal a great deal of independence, which Bellotto developed in confrontation with his famous teacher. Thanks to a donation in 2020, the Darmstadt State Museum can also show several vedute of Dresden, Pirna and Königstein as well as more than 30 etchings.
