The fontaine Saint-Lazare was constructed by Jean Goujon in 1543. Its location is named after the Canon Denis Grivot, (Rully 1921 - Autun 2008), a Catholic clergyman, honorary curator of antiquities and works of art in the Saône-et-Loire region, chapel master of the cathedral of Autun and art historian.
Autun was founded as Augustodunum during the reign of Emperor Augustus. It is estimated that in Roman times the city might have had 30.000 or even 100.000 inhabitants while today the commune has a population of about 14,000.
