This are "mikohla" (bottles for keeping kohl) from different arabic counries and true kohl or kahal from Morocco. The lid of the bottles is called in arabic merwad and is used to apply the kohl or kahal to the eyelids. The wooden marquetry bottles from Syria as well as the painted bottles from Morocco are my newest "Fair Trade" project to foster the traditional crafts in arabic countries and the little flask made of glass is very convenient when traveling.

I offer them as well as true kohl (from Morocco) and the bottles to preserve the kohl on my website at www.henna-und-mehr.de/franz/boutiq2.html (French version) or www.henna-und-mehr.de/de/boutiq2.html (German version)

True kohl is not only a cosmetica, because it is made of stibnit which has the virtue to hold off flies. Trachoma also called granular conjunctivitis and Egyptian ophthalmia is a very common eye disease throughout North-Africa and spread beside direct contact with affected persons by contaminated towels and flies. Therefore kohl is the preventive medicine against the trachoma which leads to blindness if not treated.

How the kohl or kahal is applied to the eyelids as you can see on this little video: www.henna-und-mehr.de/movies/kahal.mov

Bougainvillea is a genus of about 14 species of shrubs, vines, or small trees, in the four-o'clock family (Nyctaginaceae), native to South America. Many species are spiny. Only the woody vines have attained wide popularity; several species have produced very showy cultivated varieties often grown indoors and in conservatories.

The inconspicuous flowers are surrounded by brightly coloured papery bracts, for which one species, B. glabra, from Brazil, is called paperflower; the bracts (modified leaves, see: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bract) are purple or magenta to lighter tints in certain varieties.

The name comes from Louis Antoine de Bougainville, an admiral in the French Navy who discovered the plant in Brazil in 1768.
