I am hugely grateful to the Mancunian Legend that is Broady (www.flickr.com/photos/stephenbroadhurst/) for giving me a tour of Lowry's Manchester. This mill was a mere detour, but as worthwhile a diversion as can be imagined. Up there with the finest cathedrals, but in need of a lick of paint.

So captioned as it's the second time I've taken this photo (www.flickr.com/photos/henry_hemming/8413866529/in/set-721...). The scene is on the Rochdale Canal in Manchester's mesmerising Ancoats area (which should be a world heritage site). To the left is Canal Cottage, once the lock-keeper's cottage, and behind is Vulcan Works, once a talismanic factory supplying Manchester's mills, and still in use with light industry. Go and see it! Absorbing the view on a winter's evening was something special, and last night conjured up a sunset which reddened up the brickwork something proper...
