4001 leads the descent towards Picton with the first shuttle of the day from Thirlmere as part of the annual Thirlmere Festival of Steam weekend. Beyer-Garratt locomotive 6029 was at the other end to lead the uphill journeys.

4001 was built by the Montreal Locomotive Works in Canada for the New South Wales Department of Railways in 1951 and is based on the ALCO RSC-3 design. It was the first mainline diesel-electric locomotive to be built for New South Waled, with the class lasting only 20 years in service, all retired by 1971 due to their low power output and major electrical work being required.

Today it is preserved by the NSW Rail Museum and unfortunately doesn't run often, making it very special when it does hit the tracks.
