3830, identical to 3820, although in a green livery, was built in 1949 by the NSWGR and was the last of the 30 built C38 class locomotives and is unstreamlined.
3830 was reserved for the Powerhouse Museum upon its withdrawal from the NSWGR and spent many years as a static exhibit. However in 1988 it was towed to Eveleigh workshops to be restored to service and in 1997 it became active. 22 years later in 2009, the locomotive was withdrawn from service owing to crown stay damage and boiler repairs were being undertaken, however it is now evident no work is being done on the locomotive as it is stored towards the front of the NSW Rail Museums shed at Thirlmere.
