A tight shot of "Watching Over Texas", a sculpture by Edd Hayes, that stands outside of "Taste of Texas", my favorite place in Houston for a great steak.
The sculpture is a life-size figurative sculpture of a Texas Ranger from the 1870s. The sculpture is completely accurate, the Ranger is carrying a Colt 44/40 pistol and a 1873 Winchester also a 44/40 caliber. His clothing, boots and spurs are typical to the era. His Ranger badge is cast in stainless steel.

The honor was bestowed, based on the scope of the artist's total work along with attention to his portrayal of the history and rich heritage of Texas. Other factors include the artists' involvement with community , civic and charitable organizations. Hayes is best known for his monumental sculpture such as "Wild and Free" at the Houston Astrodome and "The Champ" in front of The Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in Colorado.
