Ford's Amsterdam assembly plant, adjacent to the North Sea Canal, opened in 1932, producing an assortment of American and British Fords models. Eventually German and French models were added. The plant was substantially enlarged in 1955. In that same year assembly of US cars ended, in favor of a similar operation in Antwerp, Belgium. When Antwerp switched to tractor production in 1964, assembly of US Fords, including the Mustang, returned to Amsterdam, but was discontinued circa 1967. By the late Sixties Ford decided that the Amsterdam plant would focus on a few specific models, particularly the Transit and Cortina (many for the UK market). Towards the end of its life, Amsterdam also assembled Ford's large Transcontinental trucks. The plant was closed in 1981 and was eventually demolished.

Ford's assembly plant beside the Bassin Canal in Antwerp, Belgium, was Ford's third plant in that city and opened in 1931. Initially it produced American Ford vehicles (including some Lincolns), but eventually British and German Fords were added to the product mix. The plant was significantly improved in the 1950's, but a decision was made to switch to tractor production in 1964 (the same year that a new Ford Factory was opened in Genk) and assembly of US Fords was moved to Amsterdam. The factory still exists and produces New Holland tractors.
