981 items
The Geotrupes stercorarius, commonly known as the Dor beetle or Dung beetle, is a remarkable insect with a scientific name that reflects its behavior and role in nature. Geotrupes, derived from the Greek words "geo" meaning earth, and "trupes" meaning drill, signifies its ability to dig into the ground. Stercorarius, meaning "the one that cleans out," highlights its role in cleaning up dung. It is worth noting that ancient Egyptians held the Dor beetles in high regard, considering them sacred.
