WWT Slimbridge.

The Rook is a very sociable bird. It feeds in large, garrulous flocks in its favoured farmland habitat, seeking out a variety of seeds, roots and soil invertebrates. Rooks are colonial nesters, building their nests within a metre or two of their neighbours. Once established, these rookeries can be enduring; some are known to have been in use at the same site for over 100 years.

My thanks to anyone who views, faves or comments on any of my photos. It is much appreciated.

The black-headed gull is actually a chocolate-brown headed gull! (About time it was renamed!) Much of the year, its head even turns white (as in the photo). Note the bright red beak and legs.

I've never noticed this one before, which is surprising really as it's quite noticable. Those purple berries really do stand out.

A deciduous shrub grows to around 2.5m high, with narrowly ovate, toothed dark green leaves that tint pink and purple in autumn. In mid-summer, produces small lilac coloured flowers in clusters along the stems, these are followed in autumn by glossy, round, pale lilac berries.

With its noisy chattering, black-and-white plumage and long tail, there's nothing else quite like the Magpie in the UK. When seen close-up, its black plumage reveals a purplish-blue iridescent sheen to the wing feathers and a green gloss to the tail. Magpies seem to be jacks of all trades – scavengers, predators and pest-destroyers. Non-breeding birds will gather together in flocks.

The moorhen is often seen on park lakes, ponds and rivers. It spends more of its time out of the water than its relative, the coot, and even climbs trees. Moorhens are omnivores, eating everything from snails and insects to small fish and berries.

Moorhens are one of the world's commonest birds and can be found right around the globe, going by different names such as 'Skitty coot', 'Marsh hen' and 'Common gallinule'.

My thanks to anyone who views, faves or comments on any of my photos. It is much appreciated.
