WWT Slimbridge

The common crane (Grus grus), also known as the Eurasian crane, is a bird of the family Gruidae, the cranes. Though common in Europe, there is an ongoing reintroduction project underway in the UK. Which includes the cranes in the photo. One of this year’s hatchlings flies in the middle of these three.

In winter the common cranes have started to form large flocks, particularly in the Nene and Ouse Washes in the Fens, and in the Broads of north-west Norfolk. Sightings of 50 birds together are now possible with the sound of loud bugling calls, echoing across the flatlands.

My thanks to anyone who views, faves or comments on any of my photos. It is much appreciated.

Young cranes can fly short distances from about 9 weeks of age. This one is probably 4 to 5 months old.

The adult birds go through their post breeding moult while caring for their young, rendering them flightless for 5 to 6 weeks, around the same time as the young are flightless.

WWT Slimbridge.

In the UK the Common Crane was officially extinct by the 18th century. However they returned in the 1980’s, and were first recorded breeding in Norfolk in 1981. Their population has increased fast with at least 30 pairs now breeding regularly.

In Somerset following a reintroduction scheme they are also increasing in number. They have also moved up the river to Gloucestershire where along with a resident breeding pair they are regular visitors to the wetlands at Slimbridge.

My thanks to anyone who views, faves or comments on any of my photos. It is much appreciated.
