Lone Tree Golden Light

With the onset of winter, prairie trees look rather bare when stripped of their autumn leaves. Most know that in landscape photography you must work with what nature provides from which to make images. On the prairie that can be a challenge with little to work with. This image is my answer to that challenge using the sky conditions, sun, one barren tree, and two hen pheasants that were flying past.

Skogafoss Waterfall Stormlight

Skogafoss waterfall pours of the cliffs that mark the former coastline now some five kilometers away. At 25 meters wide with a 60 meter drop it is one of the more massive waterfalls in Iceland. With the amount of spray the falls produce, attempts at closeup photography results in both camera gear and photographer getting drenched. Standing further back keeps you dry but having a workable foreground for a good composition becomes a challenge.
Iceland weather is very fickle changing from sunshine and a moment later to high winds with rain or snow that can blow a car right off the road. I visualized a story that included both falls and storm. To include both I chose a wide-angle perspective that included the curve of the river for compositional balance. Sunlight breaking through the clouds and highlighting the meadow below the falls served as the foreground element. The storm and subdued light set the mood.

The landscape was freshly decorated by an overnight snowfall that clung to the trees. The new coat of snow shown brightly in the cold morning light.
