Friday night's Aurora Borealis / Northern Lights from the Blue Ridge Parkway (Ravens Roost Overlook). Wow - a G5 solar storm - first since October 2003! This was the real deal.

My friends and I were marveling at our luck in having photographed the solar eclipse last month and Northern Lights this month (without flying somewhere). My friends and I, along with many photographers around the world, were blown away. The beam of light is called the STEVE phenomenon (Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement). That was so cool to see, and it didn't last long. You might also notice the moon is left of the tree.
