Shanballymore (Irish = the big old settlement).
The spring well was a very important feature in Ireland up until modern times as it was the main source of drinking water for a locality. During the 19th century, mechanical pumps were installed to replace the bucket and rope mechanism used for deep wells.
Throughout human history, settlements from small farms to large cities were built near a source of water. The well was a characteristic of most Irish villages and towns.
Water is the giver of life. So not surprisingly rivers, streams and wells became sacred sites, associated with females gods and after the coming of Christianity with female saints.
In the 20th century. the village pump was often enclosed on three sides by concrete or stone walls.
The water was mainly collected by the female members of the families. Hence the well became a focal point for the women of a local area where they could meet and socialise.
