I am not sure if this is Alex or not.
Yet, I looked into his eyes and saw him.
This is something he couldn't do in his life.
He lived music, but had no rhythm.
Last night, he did.

A merry madman.
An appreciator of gifts.
A breaker of rules.
A giver of gifts.
A facilitator of change.
He liked to blow shit up.

He was once my best friend.
He was my 3rd mentor.
I would not be the father I am without him.
I would not have found my true love.

My final lesson was to release him against his will.
He did not know this.
It was my way of being a friend.

As Randy Newman's "Sail Away" was played at his memorial service Saturday afternoon, I did not listen.
I took out a pen and paper and this is what I wrote:

As brilliant as Alex was,
The one problem he couldn't figure out was himself.
He ran away in many ways
And he made it into a movie.
And an asshole director he was.
But his film was about family.
And he always gave his family a chance.
As family they started.
And sometimes they left.
And Alex said
Sorry man...

I'm glad I saw you DJing last night. You looked really happy and the good kind of mad. You were good too. For real. Thanks for sharing that. You didn't have to. You must have seen me crying, the day before.
