i am glad i finally photographed these two places.

i've been waving as i go by for YEARS. but never had the time to stop when the light was perfect.

so the other evening i said "i don't care how hot it is, i am going!"

An image I originally uploaded five years ago and which is one of the six from the negative strip I've been scanning and uploading this last week or so. I'm re-launching it now (original upload deleted) to provide a bit more context around the day trip I made to the area while riding an Eastern Region Rail Rover in September 1976.

Framed by the ornate canopy supports, Brush class 31 no. 31283 slowly makes its way past the Tees-side dockyards and towards Middlesbrough station with a rake of mineral wagons. I gave this a slight toning during processing to try capture the atmosphere of an earlier time, and maybe create a scene that wouldn't look too amiss were it a WD 2-8-0 'Austerity' on the front of the freight! The shot was taken before those at Hartlepool, so I'm guessing somewhere between 7am and 9am - I'd spent the day before travelling around East Anglia and took an overnight train from Kings Cross to Newcastle before heading down this way. I wish I had the stamina to undertake such a journey now!

I did post a square-cropped version of this which is more computer screen friendly but, if I were to print the negative today, I'd go for this portrait view as originally composed, which I think gives the scene more room to breathe.
