Until the 1960's Bangkok was a network of canals with few real roads. Progress has replaced the water with asphalt ... But I am told that 2% of the land area is reading compared to 12 or more percent in modern western cities. The result is traffic congestion like you wouldn't imagine ... But there are still stretches of tranquil water and people going about their lives as they have for generations. The contrast is just one of the contradictions that make the city my favorite in Asia.
