SW Ohio. This old jewel was found on the side of the road where it is being used as a Halloween prop. My best guess is that it is a 1940 vintage, but I can't tie down the exact year. I would think it is pretty rare in this configuration.

Batavia, Ohio. The day I was there, I know I didn't see his entire fleet, but I'm sure he has two Autocar tow trucks and three semi tractors to compliment the wide variety of old trucks he has. There may be others hidden in one of his out buildings or in the brush where we didn't go or couldn't see into. This one is reasonably accessible to his shop so, it may be one he could get running easily although the license plate would indicate that it hasn't been on the road in quite a while.

Near Mt. Carmel, Indiana. The Snakedoctor's wife spotted this cool old truck as we wandered around Indiana looking for just such jewels. I heard a dog barking as I exited the car and began looking around for someone to ask for permission to shoot it. All of a sudden the really big dog came charging around the house and acted like he wanted a piece of me. Fear enveloped me as I noticed that only a partially open flimsy gate stood between me and his slobbering fangs. I thought I had bought the farm this time when a young man opened the front door and told the dog to chill. Luckily, the dog paid enough attention to him to back off. The stupid things I do to get a shot. YIKE! I hope that doesn't happen again.
The guy told me that the truck had begun life as a Pepsi delivery truck. Later, his grandfather converted it into a tow truck. He didn't tell me the year of the truck. Any help identifying it would be appreciated. I'm thinking around 1958.

Wilmington, Ohio. I have so many truck photos in queue that I have to put one up every so often. This cool old Diamond T wrecker is owned by someone in Batavia, Ohio which is quite near to where I live, but the Snakedoctor and I saw it for the first time yesterday about 50 miles North. My guess is that it was trailed up here, but I saw him fire it up and move it around so, although it sounded a bit rough, I know it runs. One thing I found interesting is how spotless and unblemished the chrome is among all that rust. The guy has his priorities straight. That's an amazing array of rigging on the back. Pretty heavy duty.
Another interesting thing is that we found a similar military wrecker on the way home.
The rig in the left background is a Marmon, often referred to as the Rolls Royce of trucks.
To see more of Tom's collection of historic old trucks, look at my album "Tom's Trucks".

Taken in Petoskey, Michigan.
My lady (who doubles as my spotter) noticed that cool rat rod as we were wandering around Petoskey looking for photo subjects. The sign on the side that covers the old painted one, says "Young's Excavating". You can never tell exactly what a rat is made from, but the grill and 3 emblems make me pretty sure the front end and cab came from a REO. Don't see many of them these days.
Apparently the owner drives the thing back a forth to work as I saw it driving on the main street at about rush hour time.
I should add that over the years, I've seen pretty many rat rods in or close to Petoskey. Since i've seen several together at one time or place, I dubbed them "The Northern Michigan Rat Pack". Since there is also a ton of money in the area, you'll also likely to see many classic and exotic cars in the area. Lots of contrast - kind of like the ultra rich and the common man in our society. In many ways I respect the rat rod builder more because they designed and made their cars and can work or repair them while the affluent generally buy their cars and pay others to work on them.
