National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association Spring 2013 Shoot in Friendship, Indiana. The Snakedoctor took me to the week long muzzle loading event held twice annually for over forty years on their national association's grounds in Friendship, Indiana. On one side of the road, they held most of the shooting competitions and had vendor booths selling goods related to the sport. The primitive area is on the other side of the road. Participants in this area dress and live much like our ancestors did. They also have shooting competitions and present educational information to spectators.

We had a nice conversation with this gentleman who had traveled all the way from Vermont to participate. Having spent three Summers of my youth in the state working on farms as well as hiking some of the Long Trail, camping and riding my bicycle there, I knew enough about the area to be able to relate to much of what he was talking about. I believe he said he was related to Ethan Allen. He is a retired farmer who struck me as a real deal mountain man. He is clearly a hard core Vermonter. His powder horn even had a pretty detailed map of Vermont engraved on it.

National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association Spring 2013 Shoot in Friendship, Indiana. Bob and his wife, Sharon are the proprietors of the "Laffin' Turtle - Trader" out of Bargersville, Indiana. They sell incle belts, sashes, beads and much more. I met him at the tent store he had set up in the primitive area of the muzzle loaders' week long Spring get together in Friendship, Indiana. He seemed to be a really friendly, fun guy who clearly has a wonderful pair of glasses.

National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association Spring 2013 Shoot in Friendship, Indiana. This gentleman was beating the heat of the day by sitting under a tent roof in the primitive area of the event. Although he said he was concerned about breaking my camera (a commonly expressed concern), I thought he had an interesting looking face and thoughtful expression worthy of some shots. I'm glad he agreed to allow me to take his picture.

National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association Spring 2013 Shoot in Friendship, Indiana. This vendor at the event was selling a wide range of handmade items from knives and leather goods to dream catchers made of beads. He had a large collection of these straw top hats that he said were made by some Amish girls in SE, Ohio near where he is from. I don't remember what he told me about the item protruding from the top of his hat, but I think it was a feather of some sort.
