Ithaca, New York. When I saw this yellow Police Bug in 2005, I thought it was a joke. Most of the police cars I had seen up to then were Ford Crown Vics or some type of Chevy and were powered by fire breathing gas hog V8s. Apparently this was for real. They actually used them to patrol the city. Having since ridden in my friend Goot's turbo powered VW Bug, I realize they could have been sleepers and much faster than most people would believe.

Back in the day, I had several VW's. The one I had the longest and probably should have kept looked similar to this prior to my painting it yellow. However, I think that this one has parts from years other than the year it was manufactured. The swaps would have been easy as the cars didn't change all that much from year to year and so many would be interchangeable if not exactly the same. Regardless, this looks like an old bug in great shape, just right for tooling around town while on vacation. Many of the cottage owners in Bay View seem to have old cars they garage there over the Winter and then use during the Summer season. The old cars fit in well with the surrounding historic buildings.

Dayton Concours d'Elegance held at the Carillon Historic Park in Dayton, Ohio. I think this car is fully functional, but I'm sure it is breezy. I know I wouldn't want to drive it in the rain. There must have been an amazing amount of work that went into building this thing.

Taken at a rest area on US 127 in lower Michigan.

When I came out of the facilities at this rest area, I saw this beautiful old VW minivan camper sitting there with the engine compartment open. Having had considerable experience with VW's, I immediately thought it must have overheated and possibly fried the engine. Fortunately that was not the case. The owner was simply taking precautions by letting it cool down a bit before continuing the family's trip South to Columbus, Ohio. I wish I could have found out more about it and how it came to still be in great condition and not all rusted out like most did, but we both had a long trip ahead of us in order to get home.

I once had a rusty and beat up old minivan myself back in the late 60's or early 70's that I picked up for $50 and then swapped a Porsche engine into. While we had some fun experiences with it, I didn't keep it very long and put the engine back into the Porsche before selling it.
