One of the major benefits of holding our Bodie night photography workshops in the early summer. Warm days drive convection and cloud formation over Mono Lake, and the adjacent Bodie Hills often enjoy afternoon thunderstorms, golden hour rainbows, and colorful sunsets. Fortunately this is high desert, so much of the rain doesn't even reach the ground. Although the rain shower that passed over us in June 2019 in Bodie was barely discernible to us on the ground, the rainbows that formed at least three times were nice and strong, often producing double rainbows. When the sun set, the heat driving the local showers dissipated, and the clouds broke up and drifted away for crystal-clear night photography.
