Update 9/8/2011 - This image won the People and Space category in the Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2011 competition conducted by the Royal Observatory, Greenwich (home of Greenwich Mean Time and the Prime Meridian).
My daughter Nicole Sullivan won Runner Up (second place) in the Young Astronomer category. They sent a film crew up from Los Angeles and interviewed her for 7 hours! Here's the video: www.vimeo.com/28740663

This is a self portrait under the Milky Way.
I was having too much fun pursuing Milky Way and star trail photos to sleep, but after catching sunrise I eventually caught a couple of hours of sleep from 6:15am-8:15am.

Update - I've just received notice that this photo has been shortlisted as a finalist in the the Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2011 competition conducted by the Royal Observatory Greenwich... very exciting! The initial phases of the competition involved submitting the photo to the observatory's group here on Flickr.

The light of the full moon creates a lunar rainbow in the mist of Yosemite Falls in Yosemite National Park, California. The moon only creates these night rainbows on a few days per year, when it is close to full, the waterfall is flowing high enough to produce adequate small droplets of mist, and when the angles line up just right.
I already had a number of moonbow photos from Yosemite Yalley, so for this image I decided to go a step or two further and include star trails. To provide maximum control over momentary issues such as the headlights of autos, I captured over 500 individual exposures over the course of several hours to produce this resulting image.

This lake bed was full of muddy water earlier this month, so don't rush out looking for it expecting to find it in any condition like this. Fortunately there are dry lake beds all over Southern California, so the identity and location of any particular one is fairly irrelevant.
Update January 2016; this is the "nearby location" described on pages 95-96 of my new guidebook. I couldn't make my book twice as long, but I squeezed in at least mentions for as many as I could, so another many dozen, perhaps 100+, cool sites are waiting to reward those who follow the additional suggestions!
