Now you might be foregiven if you think this is a Green Parakeet from central America. Well of course you are right! But this one lives in London born and bred.
This particular guy is one of thousands now colonising suburban areas of London, particularly where there are wooded areas and open spaces. Originally released from captivity, accidentally or otherwise, they have become naturalised and their numbers have soared dramatically.
When I was a young person these were not around, just sparrows blackbirds and the like were the norm. Now however you are definitely more likely to see dozens of these rather than see just one sparrow.
It occurs to me that the rapid rise in parakeet numbers in recent years has coincided with a very rapid decline in sparrow numbers. Is there a connection?
