This is probably the most skittish bird I've ever seen. She hung around a couple of ponds near my home for about a month. Every time I got within eyesight she flew away. For reasons unknown to me, she allowed my approach on this day. She dove into the water, caught a fish and landed on a nearby branch. I was able to watch her fish a couple more times before I left. The resulting photos were nothing spectacular, but it was a lot of fun to watch her in action. I have not seen her since.

Der Wiedehopf (Upupa epops) ist die einzige Art oder nach anderer Auffassung eine von mehreren Arten aus der Vogelfamilie der Wiedehopfe (Upupidae). Die Wiedehopfe werden gemeinsam mit der etwas artenreicheren Familie der Baumhopfe (Phoeniculidae) in die Ordnung der Bucerotiformes gestellt.
